Francisca Edwiges Neves Gonzaga discovered her passion for music when she learned to play the piano. The profession of musician, for the woman of the time, was non-existent. Determined, Chiquinha became the first popular composer in the country. She is the author of the first carnival march, Abre Alas (1899), famous to this day. Chiquinha also wrote music for plays and composed different styles, such as polkas, waltzes, tangos and songs.
Chiquinha also became involved in politics, fighting for the abolition of slavery and the end of the monarchy. She sold compositions door-to-door to free musician slave José Flauta.
Chiquinha was born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1847, and died in 1935, aged 87.
