In May 2016, Doctors Without Borders launched a program that offers free hepatitis C diagnosis and treatment. The project is based in the capital, Phnom Penh, and in 2017 treated 2,926 patients with direct-acting antivirals, curing more than 95% of those who completed the treatment. In Preah Vihear province, resistance to one of the most effective antimalarials has been confirmed. Research conducted in 2017 provided insight into the development of resistance to the three main drugs used to treat severe malaria. Research results will be evaluated and recommendations made for potential replication elsewhere. MSF has been operating in the country since 1979.
