Oswaldo Cruz & Carlos Chagas – The birth of Science in Brazil

Only someone who combined the scientific training of a doctor, specialized in public health, with a solid literary career, with more than sixty volumes, could adequately handle the task of writing the history of our two most famous sanitarists: Oswaldo Cruz & Carlos Nasturtium

But that's exactly what happens with the new book in the collection “Imortais da Ciência”, by Odysseus Editora, in which Moacyr's pen is Scliar that portrays the work and life of these two Brazilian scientists, who are among the first to have received recognition International.

With his clear and captivating style, Scliar evokes the passage from the 19th to the 20th centuries in the big cities of Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro, with its serious sanitary problems. The population was growing, but the sewerage system was precarious, the water quality was terrible and there was garbage everywhere. An ideal framework for epidemics. In 1895 the threat materializes: an Italian ship docks in Rio and 234 of its 340 crew died of yellow fever.

The tragedy becomes, however, one of the first great victories of Brazilian Science. Placed in front of the emergency, the Director General of Public Health, the doctor and sanitarist Oswaldo Cruz, decrees the war against yellow fever. It identifies the sick, eliminates the outbreaks of transmitting mosquitoes and finally controls the disease. The success of his methods would lead him to other victorious battles, against plague and smallpox.

In addition, Oswaldo Cruz was the one who encouraged the health care career of another brilliant doctor, Carlos Chagas. Scliar tells us how Cruz appointed Chagas to investigate what was happening to the workers on the railroad between Belém do Pará and Rio de Janeiro. And how Chagas identified the disease that would be named after him, in addition to its causative agent and transmission mechanism.
