The matchstick was only invented in the 19th century, but the history of the product that revolutionized the way of making fire started much earlier, in 1669, with the discovery of the chemical element phosphorus (P).
German alchemist Hennig Brand, in one of his attempts to turn metals into gold, accidentally discovered the element while manipulating urine samples. The material he obtained glowed in the dark, so Brand decided to name the substance as
Phosphoros, which means “he who brings the light, who illuminates”.In 1680, British scientist Robert Boyle, one of the founders of modern chemistry, saw that a flame was formed by rubbing a piece of paper covered with match against a piece of wood covered with sulfur.
Boyle believed that fire was not caused by friction alone, but by something inherent to those substances. And he was right, he had found the principle that would lead to the invention of phosphorus.
