August marks the traditional beginning of burning in the Legal Amazon. However, the first few days of this month were worrying. The number of fires in the region is 40% higher than in 2006. “We turned on the yellow light”, says researcher Alberto Setzer, from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). It is too early to sound the alarm, but the fear is that, if the drought that hits the region continues, the coming months will be smoky. There are two other reasons for concern. The current focuses are concentrated in the north of Mato Grosso, south of Pará and east of Tocantins, all with strong agricultural activity. And all national forest reserves registered cases of fire.
