According to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the unemployment rate remained stable in January this year, registering 8.4% of the economically active population.
There was stability though...
Despite the stability in the unemployment rate, there are still many people looking for a job in the country. The numbers also show that around 9 million Brazilians are still unemployed and looking for jobs. This situation reflects the fragility of the Brazilian economy, which has not yet fully recovered from the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
Recovery will not be easy.
The Lula government's challenge of facing the economic crisis and improving the situation in the labor market comes with a high degree of difficulty. That's because, according to surveys, around 1 million workers participated in the musical chairs in the job market, which generates an alert.
Forecasts present a bad scenario
Festive (seasonal) periods such as Easter, Children's Day and Christmas, for example, are responsible for igniting the economy, even if for a short period of time. In it, temporary jobs are generated and serve a large number of people. However, disregarding these periods, experts point to a worrying rise in unemployment by the end of the year, which could reach an incredible 9%.
The data are frightening, since the unemployment rate at the end of last year was already considered high, reaching 8.2%. Therefore, it is possible that it will grow by almost 1% by the end of 2023.
