Smoking: enemy of health and sports performance

Smoking is considered the leading cause of preventable death worldwide by the World Health Organization (WHO). Even so, it is estimated that one third of the world's adult population, that is, 1 billion and 200 million people, are smokers.

The main evil publicized as a result of smoking is still cancer. Also could, the total number of deaths due to tobacco use reached the figure of 4.9 million deaths annually, which corresponds to more than 10,000 deaths per day. But Dr. Bruno Lage reminds us that smoking also negatively impacts other aspects of our health.

“One of the problems caused by cigarettes is the reduction of HDL, the 'good cholesterol'”, he highlights. In addition, smoking increases the risk of developing thrombosis and stroke, causes changes in blood pressure and reduces respiratory capacity. “Another little-publicized consequence of the smoking habit is that it hinders the gain of lean mass, harming the performance of people who practice sports”, he completes. Therefore, alert the doctor: there is no level of cigarette consumption considered “safe” and free from health risks. “Stay away from smoking!”
