When poet Haroldo de Campos defined Paulo Leminski as “Rimbaud from Curitiba with a judoka's physique”, he wasn't kidding. In addition to being a writer, publicist and teacher, the native of Paraná practiced judo seriously. He got to know the sport through his brother, in his early 20s, and in a short time he earned his black belt.
In the 1960s, he defended the Paraná team in tournaments, participated in university championships and even won a dispute with athletes from the Armed Forces. This at the same time he was teaching and writing poetry. Leminski went beyond training: he immersed himself in the universe of martial arts. He learned Japanese ideograms, impressed by the synthesizing power of the icons. He read Buddhist philosophy, biographies and haiku, a form of oriental poem in which he also ventured a lot.
He even devoured a Bible written in Japanese. And he said that the fight helped him as a poet: “You learn to take out of yourself everything that is necessary for a decisive moment. Any hesitation, whether in the face of a blow or a poem, can be fatal”. Leminski dedicated a 1986 article to the judo teacher at the Kodokan academy, the Italian Aldo Lubes: “I learned with Aldo sensei not only blows, but all the human greatness that hides behind the practice of an art martial". Aldo was not far behind in praising Paulo, his friend and disciple for 10 years: “I was the master, but with him I learned not to see life in a complicated and material way. He was the most natural person in the world.”
