From the series “Tell a Tale”, in this “Women of Courage” Ruth Rocha offers the reader three touching tales: “Women of Courage” (which gives the title to the book and is based on an ancient legend, which inspired, among others, the great Guimarães Rosa in his novel Grande sertão: veredas), “Legend of the girl warrior” (inspired by another old legend about King Beowolf) and “Romancinho romanceiro…” (which Ruth Rocha invented thinking about stories from Middle Ages).
They all take place in a very, very distant time. At that time there were princes and princesses, knights in silver armor, castles surrounded by walls, nobles and commoners. But the most impressive thing is that at that time women could do almost nothing: just sew, embroider and study arts. They couldn't run, swim, let alone fight.
For the characters in these stories defy custom: they take up arms, go to war, they don't find the least fun in marrying a husband chosen by their father. They are, as the title says, women of courage, that is, women who are happy, intelligent and full of life; who do not lower their heads to anyone.
Noteworthy are the beautiful illustrations by Teresa Berlinck.
