A rainy day represents a lot of indoor games and a well-reinforced snack. But did you know that rainwater is naturally a little acidic?
What's more, thanks to air pollution in big cities, a type of rain is becoming more and more common? Acid rain.
Don't understand anything? How can raindrops be acidic? Calm down, let's go.
First, the rains are considered by researchers as acidic because they have a pH below 7. How is it possible? It turns out that there is carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and it interacts with water to generate carbonic acid, which is a weak acid.
So far so good. The problem occurs when polluting gases, caused by burning fuels in factories and vehicles, increase the natural acidity of rain.
The reaction of these substances with water forms nitric acid and sulfuric acid, forming “acid rain”.
Natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions and biological processes, which occur in soils, swamps and oceans, can also produce these gases. However, the pollution caused by pollution is the main responsible for the break in the normality of the pH of the rains.
The term “acid rain” was first used by the English chemist and climatologist Robert Angus Smith. Since then, the phenomenon has grown in countries undergoing industrialization processes such as Brazil, Russia, China, Mexico and India.
