Delegating small expenses to children through an allowance can be a good strategy for that 7-year-olds learn in practice what we often try to teach with scolding, complaints and punishments. Without giving up too much and using common sense, set a monthly amount for school lunch and leisure expenses – in the city of São Paulo, a good average is 25 to 30 reais a month. Do not encourage indebtedness in advance: if it is necessary to advance a small amount because the money ran out too soon, take it into the next allowance. Help your child get into the habit of jotting down expenses in a notebook or on the computer and review it together. Boost savings, guide choices, and you'll soon have great financial managers at home.
