Athletes who suffer muscle problems during competitions can use hot or cold instant bags as first aid devices. These devices work through exothermic or endothermic reactions. They usually consist of a plastic bag that contains water in one section and a dry chemical in another. When striking the bag, the section containing water breaks and the temperature rises or falls depending on whether the reaction with the dry substance is exo or endothermic. In general, for hot compresses calcium chloride or magnesium sulphate is used and for cold compresses, ammonium nitrate.
