The Egyptians, around 2800 BC, already wore a ring to symbolize marriage. To them a circle, having neither beginning nor end, meant the eternity for which marriage was destined. Two thousand years later, the Greeks discovered the mysteries of magnetism. Hence the belief that a magnet could also attract the heart. The Greeks also believed that the left ring finger had a vein that led directly to the heart. So they began to wear an iron ring magnetized on that finger, so that the hearts of lovers would be attracted forever. The custom passed to the Romans and the Church kept the tradition.
