Instituto Terra is a non-profit civil organization founded in April 1998, which operates in the Vale do Rio Doce region, between the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. This is a region of Brazil that experiences the consequences of deforestation and the disorderly use of natural resources such as drought, soil erosion and the lack of conditions for rural people to live and thrive.
Currently, Instituto Terra has 22 members, 2 of which are founding members for life, 8 founding members and 12 permanent members.
Its main actions involve ecosystem restoration, production of Atlantic Forest seedlings, environmental extension, environmental education and applied scientific research.
Instituto Terra manages the Bulcão Farm, which comprises a total area of 709.84 hectares, of which 608.69 hectares are recognized as Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) since its foundation - this is the first RPPN constituted in a degraded area of Forest Atlantic.
