Forest fires are very common in Greece. This case, in particular, was extreme due to a set of factors: dry and hot weather, strong winds and something that caused the flames.
The Greek climate is already dry and the winter of 2018, which did not have much rain, joined the heat wave that has been passing through Europe. This made it difficult to quickly control the fire. In addition, winds of more than 100 km per hour helped the flames to spread.
A similar situation happened in Portugal, in 2017, when lightning caused a fire that spread quickly through the country's dry vegetation and reached 30,000 hectares.
