Youth and adult education (EJA) is showing a growth of 23% in the last decade and thousands of older Brazilians are struggling with all the obstacles that come with literacy late.
About 900,000 people aged over 40 are in school becoming literate and learning the basic concepts of mathematics and science.
Prejudice against those over 40 who are in school is evident, but the challenges go beyond that.
College is still in the future for these people, after all, they are still fighting for the right to know how to read and write so that it is possible to access different spaces in our society.
However, in addition to the intolerance faced by being in school late, these people still face the difficulty of reconciling all this with work and night classes.
Thousands of adults reach the age of 40 without being literate

How to overcome these challenges?
With EJA students, it is essential to be very careful with the way in which the contents are transmitted, after all, although are, in many cases, being literate, the didactic materials should not be the same ones that are passed on to children.
“If the student receives an activity with the Easter bunny, he will feel infantilized. Gradually, all the effort to study is being demobilized”, says Sônia Couto.
For this reason, with these adults it is important to use the philosopher Paulo Freire as a basis and practice the “pedagogy of affection”.
“You need to know the reality of the people in the room. What is their life context? What are the needs and expectations?”, says Rosana Helena Nunes, postdoctoral fellow in education at the State University of Campinas (unicamp).
