An artist full of life, a life full of colors
Mexican Frida Kahlo is now one of the most popular artists in the world. Her paintings reach record highs, and her face is recognized around the planet. Her short life, however, was fascinating and eventful.
And no less. Frida had to deal from a very early age with a congenital physical disability, and, as a teenager, she suffered the well-known accident that nearly killed her and left her months in a bed, where she then began to paint pictures lying down, many of them self-portraits. Despite her failing health, she went ahead and married the great painter Diego Rivera, twenty years her senior, with whom she had a intense and turbulent relationship: “I suffered two serious accidents in my life, one in which a bus threw me on the ground… Another accident is Diego”. She drank from the source of the richest traditional Mexican culture and with long, colorful clothes disguised her lame step, constantly reinventing herself as a woman and an artist. She suffered several miscarriages, saw her desire to be a mother frustrated, lived unspeakable betrayals, had many loves - including women -, she was feminist in a sexist Latin America, lover of Trotsky, of whose murder she was suspected, and conquered the world with her art and her story.
María Hesse, Spanish graphic artist, offers us here a beautiful illustrated biography that presents, interwoven, the life and work of Frida Kahlo, including excerpts from her diaries, letters and depositions. The book reveals the pains and delights of her existence, but also how she used art to overcome the limitations that conditions imposed on her and reinvent her own existence. The result is a poetic, lapidary work that gives voice to one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century.
