Mosquitoes are considered one of the most dangerous types of insects in the world. Its history of spreading deadly diseases such as dengue and malaria is huge. Including, there are some mosquitoes that “prefer sting people”. Some are even attacked more than others, so there are several theories as to why this happens, such as blood, the type of clothing worn by the person or bacteria on the skin, but science does not prove any of these options.

From this new research, it was discovered that there is something in the smell of some people, which in a way is addictive for these insects. It's the production of a chemical that exudes from people's skin and makes mosquitoes want to bite them more than others.

The study in question lasted about three years, where eight participants had to wear stockings made of nylon on their arms for six hours a day, for several days. Once worn, these socks were placed in separate tubes and mosquitoes were allowed to enter whatever tubes they wanted. This type of experiment is known as a “round robin tournament”.
At the end of this experiment, the scientists were able to notice that one of the participants had something in his smell, which made mosquitoes always enter his tube. According to the results, his scent was four times more attractive than the second participant's, and 100 times more attractive than the last participant's. Whenever the most attractive contestant's sock entered the competition, it won.
Stunned by the results, the scientists added 56 more people to the experiment, and even so, the mosquitoes remained loyal to that participant.
With the end of the tournament, the scientists went to examine the chemical compounds of the participants, and were able to observe the production of carboxylic acids, which meant that mosquitoes always entered the same sock. These acids are produced by bacteria on human skin to produce unique body odors, with some people having higher levels than others.
“There is a very, very strong association between having large amounts of these fatty acids at skin and be one magnetin mosquitoes,” says study author Leslie Vosshall.
With the end of the research, the results open the way for the production of new types of repellents against these insects, in order to alleviate this so-called “addiction” that they find in certain types of skin.
