Carefully read the text below. Soon after, answer the proposed questions:
An international study, bringing together 72 experts, concluded that most of the 439 known primate species in the world are at risk of extinction due to human action. The problem is greater for the species that inhabit the countries with the greatest amount of them: Brazil (102 species), Madagascar (100 species), Indonesia (48 species) and Democratic Republic of Congo (36 species).
By analyzing the distribution of protected areas and the distribution of primate species in each of these four countries, researchers found that many of them do not have adequate security where live.
The research also assessed the types of threats that monkeys face in the four countries. One of the main problems is the loss of habitat (the place where they live), which occurs mainly in Brazil, Madagascar and Indonesia. In Congo, the most serious problem is hunting.
Some of the other causes that contribute to the threat to primates are: disease, growth of population of human beings, climate change and the illegal trade of these animals as pet.
primates in Brazil
In our country, there are today 35 species of primates threatened with extinction. Among them are four species of lion tamarins and two of muriquis. And there are still some species classified as critically endangered, such as the collared marmoset and the black couxiú.
