The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) opened the exhibition last Thursday, 8th. Don Quixote – Portinari and Drummond: reinterpretations of Cervantes
. The show features 21 drawings, including originals and reproductions, by the Brazilian artist Cândido Portinari. For each work, Carlos Drummond de Andrade dedicated a poetic gloss, which are also presented in the exhibition. The year 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes. The Spanish writer is appointed as one of the most important names in the history of world literature. His main work, Don Quixote de la Mancha, is considered the precursor of the modern novel.
The initiative was made possible through a donation from a retired professor of the Department of History of the University of São Paulo (USP), José Carlos Sebe Bom Meihy, who delivered a copy of the Publication Don Quixote: Cervantes, Portinari, Drummond, 1978.
The work features 21 original-size drawings by Portinari and the respective poetic glosses by Drummond. According to Fabrício Fernandino, curator of the exhibition and professor at the School of Fine Arts at UFMG, “it is the artist's perspective on the artist's perspective”. He also emphasizes the importance of the exhibition. “Don Quixote's proposal was precisely to do good. In a scenario of chaos like the one Brazil is going through, it's inspiring”.
