The first time that the Sphynx cat breed was detected was in 1966, in Canada, when, due to genetic mutation, a single animal was born hairless. By repeating the conditions, the scientists were able to make sure that, in the next litter, another cat was born with the same condition.

So, the Sphynxs emerged from there, which in the following decade, in the 1970s, became quite popular, appearing in television programs, series and films. The breed even became a true luxury item, and some wealthy people were able to acquire one of these kittens for a few thousand dollars.

In the following decades, the hairless cat became officially recognized, and in 1979, the International Cat Association registered the new breed. However, although they are more popular, Sphynxs are not the only breed of hairless cats, as there are a few others around the world, but in smaller numbers.

Characteristics of a Sphynx Cat

The big difference between a Sphynx cat and the one you have at home and see in the neighborhood is just the absence of hair. This is because, in all other aspects and characteristics, this type of cat is related to the rest of the species. Pay attention only to care for contact with the sun, as your skin is more exposed.

In addition, they are very playful, affectionate and tend to get attached easily to their tutors. In this way, do not be fooled by the more serious aspect of this cat, as it can be a great companion for you and your family, especially when you live with children or the elderly.
