Pelé, the King of Football, dies at 82 from cancer

Died, this Thursday, December 29, Pelé, aged 82. The King of Football treated colon cancer, discovered in September last year.

Pelé had been hospitalized since November 29 at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein to treat the disease. He filed for a reassessment of the chemotherapy. In addition, a respiratory infection was also discovered.

The King of Football showed progressive improvement at the beginning of the month. He had stable vital signs and was conscious. However, the condition has worsened since the last day 21, when the athlete needed measures to treat kidney and heart dysfunction.

Pelé's children and relatives visited him before his death

Since he was hospitalized, Pelé received visits from his children and grandchildren. Kely Nascimento, one of the player's daughters, was active on social media and shared moments with the King.

The athlete was also visited by Edinho, the twins Joshua and Celeste and by the children of Sandra Regina, daughter of the player who died in 2006.

Illness

Pale was diagnosed with colon cancer. The disease affects the large intestine and is responsible for approximately 935,000 deaths per year worldwide. The information is from the Brazilian Society of Oncological Surgery (SBCO).

This is the second most common cancer in Brazil. According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), there is an estimated diagnosis of 45,630 new cases per year between 2023 and 2025.

The disease is silent. The best way to prevent it is a colonoscopy. It is recommended for everyone aged 50 and over. If there is a family history of cancer, doctors recommend getting tested annually starting at age 40.

smoking, high alcohol consumption, diet with many ultra-processed foods, sedentary lifestyle and, mainly, family history are the main risk factors for the cancer that killed Pelé.
