As the name implies, the colorful springs are shrubs that bloom mainly in the two hottest seasons of the year: spring and summer. The most common species are the Bougainvillea spectabilis and the glabrous bougainvillea, both belonging to the family Nyctaginaceae and natives of Brazil. The plant is named after Louis Antoine Bougainville, a French navigator who discovered the variety around 1790 and took it to Europe, from where it spread throughout the world.
