During the electoral campaign that led him to victory, current President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva promised to exempt the Income tax the portion of the population that receives up to R$ 5,000 a month.
Kicking off the fulfillment of his campaign promise, last Thursday, the 16th, the president announced a change in the exemption range, from R$1,953 to R$2,640. Learn more about Lula's decision and what Unafisco says about the decision throughout the article.

The National Association of Federal Revenue Tax Auditors (National Unafisco) published a note that contains calculations on the possible impact on revenue in 2023. According to them, there will be a decrease of R$108 billion in the contribution, since most Brazilian declarations are in the range of R$1,953 to R$6,525.
Minimum wage increase
Lula also said that he would increase, albeit timidly, the value of the minimum wage. The value would be R$ 1,320 (R$ 18 more than the current value), so that workers who earn up to two salaries are exempt from the IR declaration).
more and more exempt
The president stated that the readjustment in the Income Tax table should evolve gradually. That is, the number of exemptions will gradually increase until the exemption ranges reach R$5,000, fulfilling his campaign promise.
It is worth remembering that the IR table has not been readjusted since the last year of the former president Dilma Rousseff and, therefore, there is a lag of 148%, the largest in history, as stated by the National Union.
Corrected IRPF table
If the table was not out of date and the calculation was corrected and updated, the IRPF would have an exemption range of R$ 4,683.95, which would make more than 13 million taxpayers exempt.
