They show off, invent pirouettes, go from one side to the other with incredible speed, they manage to stop in midair and even fly backwards. We have the impression of watching a ballet. The only difference is that the actors in this show don't have legs and arms, but wings. We are talking about hummingbirds!
During the day, they hardly land to rest. The fast flapping of the wings and the acrobatics during the flight make the hummingbirds expend a lot of energy. They replace it by feeding: when we say they are kissing the flowers, they are actually sucking the nectar, a sugary substance that stays in the cup of flowers and is the favorite meal of these little ones. birds. (…)
And anyone who sees hummingbirds making mischief in the air does not even imagine that each one has its own territory determined by the food area.
Poor hummingbird that invades another's space.
It will take a lot of courage to face an ugly fight, because among them the motto is “friends, friends, territories apart”!
In its area, the hummingbird not only feeds, but also bathes in streams, in the rain or in leaves wet with dew. Afterwards, it dries in the sun and, at night, shelters itself in the foliage to sleep. On very cold nights, his body temperature drops and he rests completely still. This phenomenon is called hibernation. (…)
Hummingbirds can live for five to eight years, but be aware that they are threatened by the destruction of their natural environments. In cities, the planting of flowers rich in nectar, such as hibiscus and ties, and the use of small bottles of sugar water in parks and simple gardens that allow the presence of a hummingbird.
If you want to have a visit from him, just have one of these little bottles hanging on the balcony of your house or even on your bedroom window.
Write down the recipe there: mix four to six parts of water with one part of unrefined sugar. Every two days, throw away the old mixture, wash the bottle and prepare a new one.
