The film The Great Mystic Circus, by Cacá Diegues, was announced today (11) as the Brazilian representative in the Oscar dispute. Among the strengths of the production pointed out by the selection committee are the poetic strength and presence of Brazilian music. “The world is in need of a little poetry, a little magic,” emphasized the group's president, Lucy Barreto. The feature film was chosen from 23 possible candidates.
The film tells the story of five generations of a family that owns a circus through the eyes of Celavi, an ageless master of ceremonies. The narrative mixes fantastic elements with realism. The cast includes actors Jesuit Barbosa, Mariana Ximenes, Bruna Linzmeyer, Rafael Lozano, Catherine Mouchet, Antônio Fagundes and Vincent Cassel. The script is a partnership between Diegues and George Moura. Globo Filmes is co-producer of the feature.
The commission also highlighted that aspects such as previous awards for the film, repercussion and the criteria of the Oscar jury itself are taken into account. The secretary of Audiovisual of the Ministry of Culture, Frederico Mascarenhas, said that the film will receive a support of R$ 200 thousand to promote abroad and improve the chances in the Oscar competition.
