In recent weeks, reports of emails with false accusations of piracy have increased a lot. In this case, the message presented a list of films along with the statement that the user had downloaded the works over the internet.
However, many netizens disputed the claim, as they had not downloaded it. On the other hand, many recognized the practice and, for fear of a greater legal consequence, decided to pay the amount.
However, it is already known that it is a “fishing” email, which aims to deceive people through generic information that concerns a large part of the population. In this specific case, it was possible to detect the problem, since the email did not have any kind of proof of what was being accused.
In addition, many Internet users were surprised to see that there was a complaint, even when using software that hides the download record. Due to the content of the email, the scam was dubbed a “Copyright troll”. According to the information, the “fine” to be paid was approximately R$ 3 thousand.
Brazilian legislation does not sentence anyone to imprisonment or a fine for improperly downloading movies. However, the rights to broadcast works of art and to sell them belong entirely to their producers.
Therefore, someone who trades or uses this content for economic purposes may face trial. Those who consume just for entertainment need to deal with the ethical debate, as this practice directly encourages piracy.
In general, a company or author can even claim that you pay for the content, but there will be no legal obligation there. Still, it's worth thinking about the impacts of consuming pirated content in a country where artists work hard to have popular work.
