1st and most important step: store food correctly

Before you do anything else, make sure you're storing your food correctly. This is the only solution to the problem of those who have a very strong smell. Therefore, use airtight sealing jars for them (seafood, onions, etc.) and store them separately rather than mixing them with other foods.

The other meals must be stored in well-sealed containers and packaging to prevent them from spoiling faster or leaking. Also, using clear containers is beneficial for easy viewing and ensuring you don't forget what you have in the fridge.

4 strategies to eliminate odor

  • lemon + coffee

Make a mixture by combining the juice of one lemon and a spoonful of ground coffee in a bowl. Place this combination in the refrigerator for up to three days. The solution usually solves the problem of bad odor on day one.

  • Sodium bicarbonate

Mix a teaspoon of powdered baking soda in a glass of water. Then moisten a clean cloth with the mixture or spray the inside of the refrigerator. With the cloth, gently wipe all walls, shelves and internal drawers. Remember to use a soft cloth.

  • Coffee

This is probably the most common strategy when it comes to removing the smell from a refrigerator. And it's not by chance, since this option is easy and works. Just put a cup of frozen coffee in the fridge (coffee in ice cubes is also effective).

To make it even more effective and amplify the effect, use a larger bowl or container, which helps absorb the bad smell. Coffee can be kept in the freezer longer, but change it within a month.

  • Activated charcoal

Activated charcoal is another powerful solution for removing bad odors from your refrigerator. If the other tricks don't work, this is a great alternative to try.

First of all, it is important to note that activated charcoal is a distinct product, which should not be confused with conventional (barbecue) charcoal. Natural product stores and pharmacies, among other places, certainly have this item for sale.

To use it, place a few units of activated charcoal on a plate or other container inside the refrigerator and change it every three days until the odor disappears. Remembering that in the meantime, you should avoid opening the fridge.
