Anvisa alerted the population about a toxic substance found in pasta of a specific brand. It contains adulterated propylene glycol. This substance is considered harmful and was responsible for the death of more than 50 dogs that ate snacks contaminated with it.
The brand of the product in question is Keishi from the company BBBR Indústria e Comércio de macaroni. Foods that exhibited the toxic substance were manufactured in the period between July 25 and August 24, 2022. The company is based on a series of oriental food products, such as yakissoba, ramen, udon and gyoza.
Since September 23, their sale has been prohibited, given that Anvisa found the toxin involved in the production of these masses. According to a note issued by Keishi, the allegedly adulterated batches represent about 1% of the total number of products that were manufactured and sold in that period. The agency warns consumers not to consume the products and to contact the responsible company to request an immediate return of the money. “If you don't find the date of manufacture on the label, contact the company to confirm its manufacture. If you are unsure about this information, do not consume the product,” the team said.
The brand's official website remains offline and continues to display the following message: “Some improvements are being implemented. Come back in a few moments. Thanks". To reduce further damage, all companies that are involved in this production chain that make or use propylene glycol have already been warned to recall the products.
The substance in question, propylene glycol, is widely used in the manufacture of animal feed and humans, but the one provided by the company Tecno Clean Industrial Ltda would supposedly be contaminated with ethylene glycol. This is an extremely toxic organic solvent. Among its effects, when ingested, are kidney and liver failure. However, death is also not ruled out, as we have seen with dogs.
Anvisa does not release the use of this substance in this food category, only in the refrigeration part, that is, so that it does not come into contact with what will be ingested.
