The treatment of diabetes involves careful eating, physical exercise and also the use of medication. After all, this is a disease that requires daily control to avoid complications that can even lead the carrier to death. Therefore, it is always recommended to follow the doctor's guidelines and make the correct use of medicines. However, this does not mean that this type of treatment does not involve risks, as every medication has side effects. And, according to new research, a diabetes medicine can cause birth defects in babies.

This possibility was pointed out by new studies at Stanford University, in the United States, together with the University of Southern Denmark. In this case, the scientists indicate a possible relationship between the daily use of medication for type 2 diabetes and the appearance of birth defects in children.
According to experts, the greatest chance of this happening is in the treatment of metformin in men during the preconception period. This means that sperm from a man who takes metformin continuously is at greater risk of developing birth defects.
However, doctors warn that this is still a hasty conclusion and that tests will be done again to better determine the situation. Still, the numbers are sobering, as children with birth defects are 40% more common in families whose parents use insulin.
The conclusion of this possibility came with the careful analysis of the researchers who investigated the data on births in Denmark. In all, more than 1.1 million births underwent analysis, which focused on the children of diabetic parents.
Thus, the effects of metformin during the period of sperm development were also analyzed. And, interestingly, it was possible to notice that all cases of birth defects in children of diabetic parents were male. However, the study does not contraindicate treatment with these drugs, which are essential for maintaining the health of diabetics.
