Who has never experienced the fright of plugging an electrical device into the wrong socket and ending up damaging it? This is very recurrent when we move to new houses and we still don't know what the voltages of the outlets are. To help you not go through these situations anymore, check out the tips and see how to find out if the outlet is 110V or 220V.

1. using voltmeter
One of the ways to identify the voltage of the socket is using a device called voltmeter. For this, the two terminals of the meter are placed in the socket and it reads the correct voltage.
This, according to the law of electrotechnics, is the most correct way to check the voltage of an outlet. If in doubt, call a technician to make this identification for you.
2. voltage identifier
This works as a more homemade method, alternative to the voltmeter, to identify the voltage. These tests can be found in electrical material stores, costing around 10 to 15 reais. To make it work, just plug it in and, depending on the intensity of the light, you'll find out if it's 110V or 220V.
3. Using a light bulb to identify voltage
Another possible way to identify the voltage is using a 220V light bulb. For this, you will need to buy a lamp adapter for outlets. Then, screw the 220V bulb into it and plug it into the sockets.
If the lamp does not turn on, it means that the socket is 110V. But when the lamp works well, getting well lit, it means that the socket is 220V.
4. Lampshade
If you are unable to use the lamp directly from the socket, place it in the mouth of a lampshade. Then try to turn it on. If the lamp lights dimly, the voltage is 110V. If it lights up strong and bright, the socket voltage will be 220V.
