This term came about through therapist @ask_kimberly on TikTok.
It is an inspiration in one of the actor's moments in an interview in 2005. On the occasion, a fake journalist sprays water on the actor's face through a fake microphone with the intention of humiliating him.
Faced with the situation, we imagine that Tom's reaction would be to feel very angry and retaliate against the journalist through profanity and offenses, but that's not what he did. In fact, his reaction was much more unusual than we imagined: the actor simply asked the impostor, with honest curiosity, why he had done that.
Soon after, he asked: "What's the fun of doing that?".
We can see that the interviewer soon becomes embarrassed, after all, there is no answer to that. In summary, the method consists of questioning someone who is toxic about their behavior so that they realize the irrationality present in their attitude.
It cannot be said that it works in all situations, but it proves to be very efficient several times. By questioning attitudes toxic of someone, you put them in a position where they are forced to rethink their actions. In addition, it manages to generate an embarrassment in the face of the perception of a character flaw.
We can think of an application in case someone always makes those offensive jokes about certain people. Right after the “joke”, try asking: “what exactly is the joke?”. By asking the person to explain such a joke, it will be possible to realize how offensive and disgusting it is, as well as how wrong it is.
