O Demographic Census, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) every 10 years, should have been carried out in 2020, but, due to the pandemic, it had to be postponed. The research is being carried out now, in 2022, even though it is still delayed, as the forecast for closure was October 2022, it has been extended until at least January 2023 now.
However, with 83.9% of the census population, some preliminary information is being released by the Institute, such as the preview of the population of the municipalities, using data that were collected until the 25th of December. This preview accounted for 207,750,291 Brazilian inhabitants this year.

This disclosure was carried out in order to comply with the law, which requires the Institute to provide, every year, the calculation of the population of each Brazilian municipality to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU). According to the Director of Research at the IBGE, Cimar Azeredo, the adopted model underwent several studies, including approved by the 2022 Census Consultative Commission, seeking to provide the best real and technical data possible.
TCU needs these data informed by IBGE to calculate the correct distribution of the Municipal Participation Fund (FPM), which is based on the number of inhabitants of each municipality.
Thus, the method used to disseminate these data is to use data referring to the 2022 Census in the municipalities where the collection has already been completed, while in the other cities the method is to use estimates combined with the data already collected, which allows an approximate measurement of the amount of population.
