According to information released by the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET), a cold front, along with a mass of cold air, is responsible for the low temperatures felt in a large part of Brazil this week.
The areas most affected by the cold are the South, Southeast and Midwest regions, “preferred cold” places in the country. It is estimated that the low temperatures will last until next Saturday (22).

According to INMET meteorology specialists, this is the first cold air mass of continental origin that will affect Brazil this year.
The phenomenon differs from other air masses that move across the ocean and lose intensity as they mix with moisture.
The “continental cold front” is accompanied by a flow of air from the southern tip of South America, penetrating the continent through Argentina, thus becoming more powerful in terms of influence over temperatures.
Since last Tuesday (18), the three states of the Southern Region of Brazil began to experience the most intense cold. However, low temperatures intensified between Wednesday (19) and Thursday (20).
To give you an idea, in some places temperatures below 0°C were recorded, accompanied by frost in the mountainous areas, especially in the south. do Paraná, in the southern and northern plateaus of Santa Catarina, and in the Aparados da Serra region, where the forecast of intense cold remains for the next days.
The forecast for this Friday (21) is colder in the South Region. For Saturday (22), there are chances of frost on the border of RS with Uruguay, in the Campaign Region and in the Serra do Sudeste.
In the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre (RS), which generally registers very low temperatures, the minimum can go down to between 8°C on Friday.
In the Southeast Region, the week began with very cold weather and heavy rain, especially in the state of São Paulo. With the cooling of the rains this Thursday (20), the cold takes over almost the entire state, especially in the regions of Campos do Jordão and Serra da Mantiqueira, on the border with Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
On the other hand, in western São Paulo the temperature is expected to reach approximately 9°C on Friday, with forecast of gradual rise in temperatures that will cause showers of rain until next Sunday (23).
In Minas Gerais, the cold will be more intense in the south, in the region of Triângulo Mineiro and Zona da Mata. In addition to the rains forecast for the region, temperatures show a tendency to drop to between 4°C and 5°C from Thursday to Friday.
However, on Saturday, the minimum temperatures will rise again and the maximum will remain mild due to cloudiness and drier weather. In Triângulo Mineiro, temperatures of 7°C are expected from Thursday to Friday.
In the region of Juiz de Fora, located in the Zona da Mata, the forecast indicates a reduction that could drop temperatures to 3°C from Thursday to Friday. On this last day, the city will have a maximum of 23°C.
The cold will be less intense in Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais. There, a drop of a maximum of 3°C is expected on the morning of Friday (21). The maximum should not exceed 23°C.
In the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is usually warmer, there will also be a drop in maximum temperatures. From Thursday to Friday, the city is expected to cool down to 5°C, and could go up to 15°C. In the rest of the state, heavy rains and isolated showers are expected.
In Espírito Santo, the impact of the cold will be smaller, but cloudy weather and rain are expected on Thursday, mainly in Vitória, the state capital. Maximum temperatures will drop from the 30°C observed on Wednesday to 24°C on Friday.
Finally, in the Midwest Region of Brazil, the drop in temperatures has also been present, especially in the south of the three states that make up the region: Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás.
In the south of Mato Grosso do Sul, the week started with heavy rains, which from last Wednesday (19), gave way to an intense cold.
In Cuiabá, capital of Mato Grosso, maximum temperatures should drop by around 6°C until Friday, going from 33°C observed on Wednesday to 27°C, while the minimum should decrease from 25°C to 19°C on the same period.
In Goiânia, capital of Goiás, the maximum temperatures should decrease from 32°C to 27°C, and the minimum from 22°C to 18°C in the same period.
In the Federal District, the impact of the cold front is being minimal. What has been observed is a slight drop in temperatures, with a maximum of 28°C and a minimum of 16°C expected on Friday.
