The MEI was instituted by Complementary Law No. 128, on December 19, 2008, in order to guarantee the regularization of workers who do not work with a formal contract.

The aim is to make work legal and that self-employed workers have access to the social security benefits of the INSS (National Institute of Social Security).

The Microentrepreneur allows the worker to access retirement, sick pay, maternity leave and other social security benefits from the INSS.

To be part of the MEI, the professional must fit into the more than 400 categories offered and comply with the basic rules established by the Federal Government.

Check out, just below, the new rules for those who want to be an individual microentrepreneur in 2023:

New rules and service modalities

For this year, including, there were changes in the value of DAS MEI. For Commerce and Industry it became R$67; for the Services sector, the value rose to R$71 and for those who work in Commerce and Services, R$72.

When registering with MEI, Brazilians have 480 occupations to register. The list of services is available at Federal Government website.

The other novelty is that the invoice can be issued through the Electronic Service Invoice (NFS-e) application.
