The entrance exam at the Instituto Tecnológico da Aeronáutica (ITA) is considered one of the most difficult in all of Brazil. Recently, the competition data revealed that students from the capital of Ceará occupy 36.7% of the vacancies offered. Between 2012 and 2022, 543 vacancies were occupied by candidates from Fortaleza.
Over the past 11 years, Fortaleza has been the largest city in approving candidates in all of Brazil. In 2017, 2019 and 2020, it was second only to São José dos Campos (SP), where ITA's headquarters are located.

Another contest that also had great competition was that of Aerospace Engineering: 150 vacancies were being offered, and 61 of them were occupied by students from Fortaleza.
There are six specialties offered by ITA: Aerospace Engineering, Civil-Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical-Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Computing.
The ITA is not the only entrance exam that has a high percentage in the northeastern state, as the IME (Military Institute of Engineering) also has high approval rates in Ceará. Data from the Union of Private Teaching Establishments of Ceará (Sinepe-CE) revealed that the average approval rate in the state is 30% for each IME contest.
Former students of private schools in Ceará pointed out the reason for the state's high percentage of approval in the ITA. They point out that the preparation for the test is differentiated, and there are those who look for the best students in schools. Scholarships are also offered for these outstanding students, and a pedagogical model at school for those who want to study ITA or IME.
On December 14th, Caio Temponi was informed of something completely unprecedented: at the age of 14, the teenager was consecrated the youngest candidate to be approved in the ITA. From Fortaleza, the young man is a student at Colégio Farias Brito, and the call to notify him of the competition was made by Anderson Correia, the college's dean.
For the president of Sinepe-CE, Graça Bringel, the high approval rates at ITA and IME is the result of Ceará's great dedication to teaching.
“There is an investment in technology, in top professionals, emotionally. All these students are monitored by psychologists, they have their families too… I think they found a way to prepare the students, a recipe that worked”, she said.
The state's relationship with the ITA test is something very old, as Bringel reported. This is because the institution was founded by a native of Fortaleza, Marechal Casimiro Montenegro Filho. With great pride in this placement, the president even joked about the fact.
“If you want to find someone from Ceará, just look at the ITA and you'll find it”, he said between laughs.
