According to the Brazilian Society of Immunizations, there are no restrictions related to the consumption of alcoholic beverages before or after a vaccine against Covid-19. In addition, they claim that moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages did not interfere with any response generated by the vaccine, nor did it increase the risk of adverse events after vaccination.
On the other hand, this condition can have consequences depending on the amount of alcohol in the body. Excessive intake or chronic abuse can weaken the entire body, including the immune system, promoting the onset of some infections.
Excessive alcohol consumption can suppress the immune system and interfere with long-term responses. vaccines, according to a study published in the journal National Center for Biotechnology Information.
Because it can take weeks after an injection for the body to produce protective levels of antibodies against the new coronavirus, anything that interferes with the immune response is cause for concern. However, another study, from this same journal, added that moderate alcohol consumption did not have this effect or negative consequences.
According to the Reuters news agency, it was precisely this interference in the immune system that led the vaccine manufacturer Sputnik V to issue instructions advising people to avoid alcohol two weeks before the first dose and four weeks after second.
However, Dr. Alexander Gintsburg, head of the research team that created the Sputnik V vaccine, said a total ban on alcohol is not necessary. However, it is important to take conscious consumption into account, so it is sufficient to avoid drinking for three days after receiving each dose of the vaccine against Covid-19, as well as any other vaccine.
