Goliath bird-eating spider, this is the nickname of Theraphosa blondi, due to its incredible predatory capacity. This spider is registered in the Book of Records as the largest spider in the world in terms of body mass.
As for the size of the Goliath, it can reach up to 30 cm in wingspan, 13 cm in length and its weight can be up to 200g. Regarding their longevity, females of the species can live for up to 20 years, while males die earlier, they survive for 6 years on average.
Because it belongs to the tarantula family, popularly known as crabs, this spider has very long legs with two claws at the ends, since its body is covered with thick bristles. In addition, it has extremely urticating hairs in the abdominal region.
It is a nocturnal animal and, despite its nickname, it does not usually feed on birds. While it is perfectly capable of killing a bird, it prefers to walk on the ground and therefore doesn't encounter many birds in its path.
Thus, it feeds mainly on frogs, earthworms, small rodents, some snakes, other spiders, lizards, bats and insects such as crickets, grasshoppers and cockroaches.
This species exhibits very aggressive behavior, for this reason it should not be handled by inexperienced people, mainly because its bite is very painful, despite not being poisonous to humans.
If one day you come across a spider like this, know that it has stridulating organs, which allows it to make noise when it feels that it is in danger. Take care and leave immediately!
Finally, where does this animal live? The Goliath Birdeater usually digs large holes in forested regions in humid places and temperatures between 21°C to 42°C. She can live her whole life in that kind of environment.
