According to the girl's mother, the artificial intelligence device would have suggested that her daughter do the “coin challenge”, which consists of touching a coin to the pins of a charger connected to a outlet. This "joke" can cause shock by electric current, in addition to other serious consequences, such as burns on the fingers.
The girl's mother, Kristin Livdahl, posted what happened on her social media and it soon went viral. On Sunday (26), she says that when asking for a challenge, her 10-year-old daughter would have heard the following instructions from Alexa:
“Here's something I found on the web. According to ourcommunitynow.com: The challenge is simple. Plug a phone charger halfway into an outlet, then touch a coin to the exposed pins.”
This challenge went viral on the video social network, TikTok, about a year ago. At the time, several experts warned children and their families how dangerous play could be. Because in addition to the risk of causing fires, the action could cause permanent damage to health, including burns and loss of fingers.
However, despite the suggestion, Livdahl stated that her daughter did not perform the challenge, as she interrupted it.
“I was there when it happened and we had another good conversation about not trusting anything on the internet or Alexa.”
In a press release, the company said it was aware of the problem and had already resolved the issue with a software update.
“Customer trust is at the heart of everything we do, and Alexa is designed to deliver accurate, relevant and actionable information to customers. As soon as we became aware of this error, we quickly fixed it and are taking steps to help prevent something similar from happening again.”
