Survey shows which language is the most spoken in the world; and it is NOT English!

When the subject is language, the English language is always the center of attention, and is even considered a “universal language”.

However, except for the undeniable importance and influence of the Anglian language, the fact is that English is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the most spoken language on the planet.

This statement was confirmed by a survey carried out by the Cervantes Institute, in Spain. According to the institute, Mandarin, used in China, is the most spoken language on the planet. It is closely followed by Spanish, a language studied at the institute.

According to Cervantes' study, almost 1.5 billion people speak Mandarin natively. This includes the inhabitants of China Mainland and associated regions in its surroundings, such as Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

On the other hand, Spanish is spoken natively by 500 million people. Furthermore, the institute estimates that around 600 million people speak the Spanish language in a “potential” way, through studies or mere affinity.

In a press conference held last Monday (30) and dedicated to the publication of the results of the survey, Luis García Montero, director of the Cervantes Institute, celebrated the results of the search. “We are the second language in the world in native speakers after Mandarin,” he said.

And on the internet, what do people usually say?

As far as communication via the internet is concerned, there is no way. English is actually the most used language in all types of communication on the web, according to the Instituto Cervantes report.

The institution places Mandarin as the second largest “digital language”, followed by Spanish, which is also widely used on the internet.
