Increase in gas vouchers and Brazil Aid is still under analysis

Today, social programs are the government's main income transfer tool for low-income people. Thus, program beneficiaries Brazil Aid and Vale-gás will be able to receive more than 700 reais from the federal government from the second half of this year. The amendment is still under analysis, pending the approval of the National Congress.

Gas Voucher and Brazil Aid

The benefits of Vale-Gás and Auxílio Brasil are aimed at low-income families, with the former only intended for the purchase of gas. These benefits are paid on the same date, and the gas voucher is released every two months, always in even months.

Thus, the value of the voucher intended for the purchase of cooking gas is equivalent to 50% of the national average price of the 13 kg cylinder, while the Aid has a minimum value of 400 reais per family.

Who can receive these programs?

Every two months, families are selected to participate in the Vale-gás program in order to receive payment. The public that receives this benefit is defined by the federal government as follows:

• Families with a monthly household income equivalent to half or less of a minimum wage, registered in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (CadÚnico);
• Families that have people assisted by the Benefit of Continued Provision (BPC), who live together;
• Preferably, those who have women victims of domestic violence in their family who are supervised by protective measures.

In cases of extreme poverty, Auxílio Brasil benefits are available if the monthly per capita family income does not exceed 105 reais. Families with income between 105.01 and 210 reais are also eligible, as long as their members include pregnant women or children under 21 years old.

Government project for increases

The government's plan is to increase payments for both benefits and complete them by mid-2022, a few months before the elections. With that, the Brazil Aid would go from 400 to 600 reais, and the gas coupon would go from 53 to 120 reais. So whoever receives these two payments can add up to 720 reais.

In June, Auxílio Brasil served around 18 million people, while Vale-gás served more than 5 million Brazilians, according to the Ministry of Citizenship. However, it is important to emphasize that they are different programs, have no impediments and the law allows accumulation.
