In the first months of life, the child's digestive tract is not yet fully formed. Although the stomach works perfectly, the gastroesophageal sphincter – a valve located between the esophagus and stomach, which would normally close after the passage of food - does not work as in a adult. Therefore, it is normal for a child to regurgitate, letting the food return to the esophagus and then expelled. In general, the apparent discomfort stops happening between 6 and 18 months of age.
