The name “piranha” comes from the Tupi-Guarani languages and may have originated from the union of the word “pira” (which means “fish”) with the word “sanha” or “ranha” (which means “tooth”). Close relatives of tambaqui and pacu, piranhas live in some rivers in South America, such as those in the Amazon, Paraná-Paraguay and São Francisco basins. There are reports, however, of piranhas found in the United States, Asia and Europe. These animals were probably exported as ornamental fish and then ended up being released into lakes and rivers in these regions. It is in the Amazon and Pantanal, however, that the most feared species among all the piranhas lives. Called chin or piranha-caju, it has a sharp bite, which causes serious injuries.
