There are macroscopic algae of various colors. Some are green, like most land plants. Others have colors ranging from brown, red, burgundy and pink. They also have different shapes. Some grow like a crust, making it almost impossible to pull them out of the rock – these are usually pink. There are those that look like very fine threads, those that resemble lettuce, those that look like ribbons or that branch out a lot, forming small bushes.
The size of macroscopic algae also varies widely. The smallest, with the appearance of threads or filaments, may not reach an inch in length. The biggest ones – brown algae known as kelps – often found in cold water coastal regions like Patagonia, can be up to 60 meters long!
