In the 1980s, researchers found a way to make viruses our allies in treating some diseases. They decided to take advantage of the ability of viruses to enter cells to deliver drugs throughout the body. It works, more or less, like this: the genetic material of the virus is removed and the capsid is filled with medicine.
This has proven to be a good way to transport drugs through the blood and insert them directly into cells that need treatment. Currently, the technique is used, for example, to distribute heparin – a substance that inhibits blood clotting – in the body of people with thrombosis.
