The Viaduto do Chá, in the center of São Paulo, has this name because there, around 1820, one of the first attempts to cultivate tea in Brazil took place. Built by a private company in 1892, its metallic structure ________ all imported from Germany. As the work was expensive, the construction company decided to charge tolls from pedestrians who passed by there (three cents, the Portuguese currency used at the time). At first, no one complained. Before the opening of the viaduct, crossing the Anhangabaú River was a risky adventure. Whoever left Patriarca Square towards the Municipal Theater, which didn't even exist at that time, had to go down to the bottom of the valley, passing by a tea plantation, crossing a footbridge over the river and climbing the steep Morro do Tea. For almost four years there were protests, until the City Hall decided to take him over, allowing him to cross.
