Big Ben, the most famous watch in the world, turns 160

160 years ago, on May 31, 1859, Big Ben, the symbol of British punctuality, began to move its hands. The first chimes sounded months later, on July 11 of that same year.

On this anniversary, like last year, Big Ben will be silent. Since August 2017, the Elizabeth Tower – the 96-metre high tower, which houses the clock and bell, next to the seat of the British Parliament – has undergone the largest restoration in its history. For the first time, the pointers and engine were completely disassembled.
