About two hundred years ago, there were only two types of clothing for most people: “everyday” and “Sunday”. In Europe, for example, everyday clothing consisted of coats, trousers, shirts and robes made from thick, simple fabrics. The same pieces were used for decades on end and often passed on. The so-called Sunday clothes were reserved for special occasions, such as celebrations and going to church. On colder days, members of the same family often had to rotate an important piece of clothing, such as the robe. Brothers and sisters had to wait several Sundays for their turn to be able to go to Mass in this garment, which was considered a privilege.
