Europeans, in the middle of the 19th century, fled from water as if it were a plague. Literally. Because hot water dilates the pores, European doctors believed that bathing facilitated the entry of germs. In other words, escaping from the bathtubs was recommended as a hygiene measure. Another belief was that water softened the organism and impeded growth. Thus, children were often prevented from entering the bath until a certain age. But it's no use using these excuses to evade your mother's screams by sending you into the shower. Today, we know that these beliefs have no logic. In fact, the equation works the other way around: bathing helps prevent illness.
