The Caatinga is the only biome exclusively Brazilian and, contrary to the propagated image of isolation and cracked soil, harbors a diversity of species that is still little known ______ much of the population.
Regarding the size of the Caatinga, data from federal government agencies vary, pointing to an area between 800,000 and 900,000 km², corresponding to about 11% of the national territory.
It encompasses semiarid climate regions in the states of Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia and the northern part of Minas Gerais. The name of the biome comes from the Tupi-Guarani and means white forest, a reference to the color of the trunks of plants that lose their foliage in the driest periods.
